The meeting today between House Speaker Paul Ryan and the presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump is one of the most important events of the presidential cycle thus far. Unifying the party it essential for the Republican Party as it heads towards the general election. As Abraham Lincoln once wrote, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."
Though I do not expect Speaker Ryan to endorse Donald Trump, this meeting is the first step in the process of uniting the party. If both men go into the meeting with an open mind and the willingness to find common ground, perhaps at some point in the future, Speaker Ryan will be in a place where he can support the presumptive nominee.
