Yesterday, I had an opportunity to visit McKinley Technology High School, where I had the opportunity to speak to kids during History Makers. The kids at McKinley were sharp, honest, and engaging. I had the opportunity to talk them about entrepreneurship, being a business owner, and politics. To see these bright young African-American teenagers in a positive light was something that we seldom see in the news.
With police shootings seemingly a normal occurrence and the negative portrays and stereotypes of African-American youth, I deemed it a neccessity to sit down and talk to these kids. It astonishes me how some are so quick to cast judgement based on personal biases or things they have seen on t.v. It’s a tragedy because we allow ourselves to miss so much when we pre-judge people.
