Fox hunting in the Baltimore area dates back to colonial times, with formal clubs like the Baltimore Fox Hunting Club (around 1793) and the Elkridge Fox Hunting Club (founded 1878) establishing traditions in areas like Govanstown, Homeland and Charles Street, evolving into major equestrian events such as the historic Maryland Hunt Cup (1894) in Worthington Valley, deeply rooted in the region’s landscape and culture.

While hunting foxes (red and grey) remained central, clubs also embraced other equestrian activities, and the emphasis shifted toward the thrill of the chase, scenery and hound work, with many hunts now focused on trail hunting.

It is truly an enduring legacy: Fox hunting remains a deeply embedded tradition in Maryland, celebrated through events like the Hunt Cup and the continued activities of clubs in the greater Baltimore area.
