Gary Sinise

Known to audiences for his acclaimed acting career, Gary Sinise has devoted much of his life beyond the screen to supporting our nation’s military members, veterans, first responders, and their families through tireless advocacy and philanthropy. His work has become a living reminder that patriotism is not simply spoken; it is demonstrated.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, The Baltimore Sun spoke with Sinise, who has spent decades ensuring that those who preserve our freedoms are never forgotten. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Gary, as America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, what does this milestone mean to you?

We live in a great country. I spend a lot of time supporting the men and women who serve our nation, and I often think: Where would we be if nobody stepped forward to defend and protect it?

Over these 250 years, there have been extraordinary sacrifices made so that America could endure and remain free. We can never do enough to honor those sacrifices.

Whenever I see the red, white, and blue, I think about the men and women who serve under that flag and what that flag means to them. I think about duty, commitment, and sacrifice.

I’m a grateful American. This is a great country.

As we mark this historic anniversary, what would you say to younger generations about those who sacrificed to build this nation and preserve it for future generations?

One of the challenges today is that there can be a growing disconnect between the average citizen and our military. If you don’t personally know someone who serves, it can be difficult to fully understand what that service demands.

That’s why I encourage young people to learn our history to understand what veterans and military families have contributed throughout America’s 250-year journey.

Freedom has always come at a cost. It has been preserved by people willing to put something greater than themselves first.

Take time to listen to veterans. Learn their stories. Visit memorials. Support those who serve whenever you can.

That connection matters because the future of the country depends not only on remembering sacrifice but continuing to value it.

Gary Sinise, thank you not only for your remarkable career, but for your unwavering commitment to honoring those who have worn the uniform and strengthening America’s spirit of service.

Thank you.
